Focusing On What Really Matters.

Since the return of the Felon-in-Chief to the Oval Office, it seems that Democrats have spent most of their time focused on the Felon’s failing physical and cognitive health, as well as his despicable behavior and outrageous statements.

Every day, we see and hear their reactions to his repeated lies about the 2020 election. His daily lies about the economy. His attacks on the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center. His destruction of the East Wing. His plans for a Kremlin-style ballroom, as well as his Arc d’ Trump and the Washington golf course.

Certainly, these things are alarming. But they are mostly distractions – mere symptoms of the many excesses of the Trump regime.

There are far more important concerns, such as the ill-considered war with Iran, the growing oil crisis, the mass deportations of people of color, the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, Russia’s war on Ukraine, the weakening of our military and our international standing, our relationships with allies and our trading partners, the numerous violations of our Constitution, the massive corruption of the Trump crime family and its billionaire friends, our exploding national debt and, most important, the upcoming midterm elections.

For far too long, Democratic leaders have been relatively silent about the things that truly matter. And now it seems that they are just biding their time until the new Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027.

But there’s an old truth about not counting your chickens until they’re hatched. In fair and free elections, Democrats will almost certainly enjoy a large blue wave. But there are no guarantees that the elections will be fair and free. Indeed, they may never even happen.

For months, Trump and his fascist friends have been preparing to steal the elections. In Republican-controlled states, they have used extreme gerrymandering in an attempt to dilute Democratic votes. They have closed polling places in Democrat-leaning districts. They have tried to disrupt mail-in voting. They have tried to override state control of elections. They have tried to gain access to every state’s voting records. They have threatened to deploy ICE thugs to polling places in an effort to intimidate black and brown voters. They have threatened to prosecute poll workers. They have threatened to declare a national emergency to delay or deny the elections. There’s talk of an apparent plan for Speaker Johnson to refuse to seat newly elected Democrats. And Trump has rehired Elon Musk despite claims by Musk’s ex that he bragged about using his Starlink technology to rig the 2024 election on Trump’s behalf.

Think all of this is a Democrat-inspired fantasy? Think again.

If the Felon and his MAGAts were willing to attack the nation’s capital on January 6, 2020, with the intent of overturning the election results and hanging Mike Pence along with Democratic representatives, what’s to stop them from doing it again? Or from doing something worse? After all, those MAGA criminals have been pardoned and are undoubtedly on standby to do the Felon’s bidding again.

So, instead of focusing on the daily chaos, the hateful messages, the latest faux pas, and the latest vanity project, Democrats need to be laser-focused on protecting the midterm elections and countering every possible MAGA attack. They can’t take for granted that the midterms will see a new Congress willing to rein in this fascist regime. Democrats and independents need to vote in overwhelming numbers and be prepared to fight as if the future of our democracy depends on them.

Because it does.

Who could have imagined the FBI and DOJ becoming part of a crime syndicate in support of a narcissistic crime boss? But that’s exactly what has happened. Even the MAGA-dominated Supreme Court has participated in the ongoing crime spree by granting the Felon immunity while sitting in the Oval Office, and by gutting the Voting Rights Act allowing MAGA to gerrymander districts in his favor.

And, of course, all of the MAGA Republicans in Congress should be considered co-conspirators and accessories after the fact.

The Felon-in-Chief once bragged that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and people would still vote for him. Turns out he has done far worse. The first weeks in his 2nd term he froze spending for USAID. That single action is estimated to have led to the deaths of millions. Since then, he has engineered budget cuts making healthcare unaffordable for millions of Americans. He and his ICEstapo have incarcerated thousands of immigrants, most of whom were here legally. He has overseen the executions of dozens of men operating boats in international waters. He has sent billions to Israel to help them continue their genocide in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. He allowed Israel to drag us into a war against Iran resulting in the deaths of 13 American service members and hundreds Iranian civilians, including 120 school children and their teachers. And he cut funding for the institutions responsible for preventing the next pandemic which could again lead to the deaths of millions.

It’s clear that his actions have killed many times the number of people as all the rest of the world’s organized crime families combined. And, with the power of the U.S. military and its stockpile of nuclear weapons, there is literally no limit to the harm the Teflon Don can inflict.

Moreover, there seems to be no limit to the amount of taxpayer funds the Felon and his charlatan family and friends plan to steal. It began with his $3.4 million weekend golf trips. Then there’s his family’s crypto schemes, his billion-dollar ballroom and other vanity projects, his $1.776 billion slush fund intended to pay off his criminal supporters, the blatant insider trading of he and his gang, Kristi Noem’s $250 million vanity ad campaign, Sean Duffy’s year-long all-expenses paid family vacation…the full extent of the corruption is much too long to cover here. On top of all that, if the DOJ “settlement” of the Felon’s lawsuit is allowed to stand, he and his family will be able to defraud the government out of many more billions in taxes for the rest of their lives.

It’s enough to make Mafia families, Mexican drug cartels, and all the rest of the world’s organized crime families green with envy.

America First? Hardly! More Like Me First.

Trump followers would have you believe that their movement is determined to Make America Great Again. To rewind the clock and return America to the mythical, utopian state of their ancestors. A state in which everyone looked like them, worshiped like them, and thought like them. A state that welcomed immigrants to the Great Melting Pot but only if they were white and their origins were in Europe. A state in which Americans were free to say and do whatever they wanted without regard to the feelings of others.

But it should be obvious that the movement is less about what the nation’s Framers envisioned and more about selfishness, authoritarianism, celebrity, racism, and fraudulent religious beliefs.

As evidenced by those who attacked our Capitol on January 6, 2021, at the heart of the movement are bullies and aspiring bullies of the Millennial and Gen X generations. These are people who spent their formative years surrounded by the material excesses of capitalism and being told that they were special. Many never learned to genuinely compete for anything. Instead, they were given participation trophies for just showing up.

They are the first generations to grow up playing computer games, surfing the Internet, and posting as trolls on social media. Indeed, that’s where they get most, if not all, of their information. Rather than trust journalists, scientists, experts, and government officials, they place their trust in YouTube videos, Instagram, anonymous Facebook groups, Internet influencers, and rightwing media hosts – evidence and facts be damned.

They grew up watching “reality” TV where they learned admire power, cunning, and vanity. As a consequence, they are inordinately impressed by wealth and celebrity, expecting that one day they, too, will live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. They populate mega-churches where they worship the almighty dollar being told that, if they only pray enough, all of their dreams will be fulfilled.

Unfortunately, for many, their expectations tend to be far greater than their work ethic.

Having failed to achieve their grandiose goals, they have immersed themselves in a sea of grievances directed at those they believe have denied them their due. They are certain their lives would be better if not for immigrants and people of color cutting in front of them to claim the degrees, jobs, positions, and stature they have long considered their birthright.

Asked to participate in three ill-conceived and unwinnable wars, some volunteered and came home even more damaged than before – angry, belligerent, and racist. So, when a narcissistic, lying “reality” TV star and conman came along telling them that he would Make America Great Again by ridding the nation of immigrants and returning their birthright, they happily embraced him. Not just as a celebrity and politician, but as a god – a reincarnation of Jesus himself.

And it’s not only the quest for material things that drives these MAGAts. They are utterly obsessed with personal freedom.

They spend thousands on weaponry, ammunition, and body armor to prepare for the coming “storm” as foretold by the mysterious and fictitious Q. They walk around with a Bible in one hand and a copy of the Constitution in the other having read neither. They falsely believe that the Constitution guarantees them the right to do as they please without regard for the rights or the safety of others. They are contemptuous of education, science, and expertise. They support law enforcement as a means of controlling others. But when police try to hold them accountable for their own lawlessness, they consider it an unconstitutional intrusion by big government and the “Deep State.”

Many hate Boomers, the generation of their parents, who they feel reaped the rewards of the American Dream while leaving them to struggle on their own. And they have a particular dislike of their political enemies as evidenced by their chants of “lock them up” and their threats to exercise their Second Amendment rights. On social media, they circulate falsehoods and preposterous stories that portray their “oppressors” – Democrats and “the libs” – as the embodiment of evil. They convince themselves that their opponents are cannibals and child sex traffickers who drink the blood of their innocent victims, that the 2020 election was stolen, and their hero is still the legitimate president of the United States.

Given their autocratic and anti-American beliefs, there can be no giving in to their view of America. There can be no compromise. We cannot permit these people to destroy our democracy and everything our ancestors fought and died for. Indeed, in the coming months, we may be forced to fight for democracy again. When Trump and his crime family are inevitably found guilty of their many felonious and treasonous acts, their supporters may once again turn violent as they did on January 6, 2021. We must be prepared for that likelihood.

But overcoming their violence will not alone end the threat. The only way for that to happen is for those of us who believe in democracy to vote. To soundly, and repeatedly, defeat Trump and his entire slate of Republican fascists at the ballot box.
